Do You Need a Permit for Tree Removal in Fairfax, VA?
It depends on whether your home is in the City of Fairfax or Fairfax County. A Fairfax mailing address doesn’t always mean the City. In the City, you need a permit to remove a tree over 5 inches across (measured 4.5 feet up) on home lots over half an acre, in stream buffers, and in townhouse, planned or commercial areas. Dead trees count too. The fee is $25 for a single-family lot and $100 for other properties. Review takes about 7 to 10 days. See the City’s tree removal permit guide.
In Fairfax County, including Fair Oaks, Mantua and Fairfax Station, you usually don’t need a permit to remove one tree on your own lot. There are three exceptions. Land along a year-round stream, usually within 100 feet, may be a Resource Protection Area. Check the county’s RPA map. Removing dead, dying, diseased or invasive trees there takes a free county waiver, and you may need to replant. Clearing more than 2,500 square feet needs a permit. And your HOA may have its own rules.
Not sure which rules apply? We check before we quote and tell you what’s needed. You can also read the official rules from the City of Fairfax and Fairfax County.

FAQ About Tree Service in Fairfax, VA
Have questions about tree service in Fairfax, VA? Here are the ones we hear most. Don’t see yours? Call us. Our arborists will get you a straight answer.
In the City of Fairfax, often yes. Trees over 5 inches across need a permit on home lots over half an acre, in stream buffers, and in townhouse, planned or commercial areas. In Fairfax County, one tree on your own lot usually needs no permit. The exceptions are stream buffers, clearing over 2,500 square feet and HOA rules.
Yes, if it’s an immediate threat to people or property. Take photos first. Then tell the City and apply for the permit. Not sure? Call the City’s Urban Forest Manager at (703) 385-7930.
It depends on the tree’s size, where it stands and how we can reach it. Trees near houses or power lines, or ones that need a crane, take more time and gear. We give you a free estimate with a clear, upfront price before any tree removal starts.
We often answer within minutes, usually have a crew on the way within 15 minutes, and are typically on site within 1–2 hours. Call now, 24/7: (703) 659-8733.
Stay away from it and call Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357 (or NOVEC at 703-335-0500 if they’re your utility). Virginia law bars tree work within 10 feet of a high-voltage line until the utility makes it safe. We coordinate with Dominion or NOVEC when it’s needed, and depending on your project, Dominion can sometimes help at no cost to you.
In the City of Fairfax, report it on Fairfax City Resolve. On most county roads, call VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623). Call 911 if anyone is in danger. Trees on private property are the owner’s to remove, and we can help.
Red maples, tulip poplars, oaks and American beech are everywhere here. The biggest threats right now are emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly and beech leaf disease, plus bacterial leaf scorch, which hits oaks across Virginia. Our plant health care catches problems early.
