Land Clearing in Burke VA: What to Know
Burke follows Fairfax County rules. The county treats removing trees as clearing. If your project disturbs about 2,500 square feet or more, you need an approved county plan before work starts. The county counts the work area plus a 10-foot work zone around it and a 10-foot access path from the street, so a small job can cross that line fast.
Watch the water. Burke Lake, Lake Braddock and Royal Lake all sit in the Pohick Creek watershed. Land within 100 feet of a stream that flows all year is a protected Resource Protection Area, and clear-cutting there isn’t allowed.
No burn piles. The county bans controlled burning on lots under 5 acres and all of May through September. So on a smaller lot, we chip the brush, grind it on site with forestry mulching, or haul it away.
Get your property ready fast with professional land clearing. Our crews handle lot clearing, brush removal and stump grinding, open access for driveways and utilities, and prepare sites for construction or new landscaping with low-impact equipment and strict safety standards. We manage debris hauling and keep nearby structures and plantings protected across Burke, Fairfax, McLean, and Ashburn. The result: cleaner, safer, build-ready lots without the hassle. Land Clearing in Burke VA: Permits, Creeks and Cleanup
Planning to clear a lot, a back yard or an overgrown field in Burke Virginia? These are the questions Burke owners ask most: permits, stream buffers, HOA rules, cost and what happens to the brush. If yours isn’t here, give us a call for expert advice.
Yes, if the work disturbs about 2,500 square feet or more. Burke follows Fairfax County rules, and that much clearing or grading needs an approved county plan before work starts. Removing trees counts as clearing, and the county adds a 10-foot work zone and a 10-foot access path to your work area. We help you check first, or you can call Land Development Services at 703-222-0801.
Only with county approval. Burke Lake, Lake Braddock and Royal Lake all sit in the Pohick Creek watershed. Land within 100 feet of a stream that flows all year is a Resource Protection Area (RPA). Dead, dying or invasive plants can come out with a free county waiver, but clear-cutting and clearing for new lawn aren’t allowed, and fines can reach $5,000 a day. We guide you through the county’s RPA map before any clearing starts, and our arborists can write the arborist letters some rules require.
Often, yes. Burke Centre’s 2026 rules require ARB approval to remove a tree 4 inches or wider that stands more than 15 feet from your house, garage or deck. Measure the trunk 12 inches above the ground. Owners can’t remove trees past their own lot line, and tree debris can’t be dumped on Conservancy land. Other Burke HOAs set their own rules, so check before the job starts.
Usually not. Fairfax County allows controlled burns only on properties of 5 acres or more, and never from May through September. So we chip it, haul it, or use forestry mulching, which grinds trees and brush into mulch right on site. Forestry mulching improves soil health, controls erosion and removes the need to haul debris away.
It depends on the size of the area, how thick the trees and brush are, the slope, how easy it is to get equipment in, and whether a county plan is needed. Mulching on site versus hauling matters too. We walk the lot with you and give you a free estimate. Every quote is a clear, detailed written price before work starts. Our customers often mention how detailed our proposals are.
Yes. We specialize in site preparation for residential, commercial and government projects, including land grading and clearing for a level, build-ready surface or better drainage. Our heavy-duty equipment handles efficient brush removal and vegetation clearing on large lots, fields and overgrown properties while protecting the areas around them. We plan the work route around septic drainfields. Tell us about anything buried or hidden (septic, sprinklers, an old cistern or well) before we visit, since we can’t see underground. We work for homeowners, HOAs, developers, commercial properties and government sites in Burke, Fairfax, McLean, Ashburn, and nearby.
